Was the profit growth earned?reported vs core, one dot per company

On the dashed line, profit grew because the business did. Below it, in the shaded zone, the headline was lifted by other income, one-off gains or a lower tax rate. Click a dot for the company.

Headline vs core profit

Core profit = profit before tax − other income − exceptional items. A question when reported profit growth beats core growth by 15 points or more (serious at 35).

Other income carrying profit

Other income as a share of profit before tax: a question at 30% and rising 10 points on the year; serious at 50%.

Tax rate lifting profit

Effective tax rate 10 points or more below its average over the previous four quarters, or a tax credit on a pre-tax profit.

Exceptional items that recur

Exceptional items in 3 or more of the last 6 quarters, or one worth 20% or more of pre-tax profit.

Operating margin

EBITDA margin down 300 bps or more on the year; a note at 150 bps; a note when margin rises 300 bps on revenue growth under 5%.

Depreciation and finance cost

Depreciation down 10% or more while revenue grew; finance cost up 40% or more and above 15% of EBITDA.

Cash behind the profit (Q2, Q4)

Operating cash flow for the half or full year against profit: a question below 0.5×, serious when negative on a profit.

Receivables and inventory (Q2, Q4)

Days of sales against the last year end: a question at +15 days for receivables (serious at +30) and +20 days for inventory.

Borrowing while holding cash (Q2, Q4)

Borrowings and cash both up 20% or more since the year end.

Auditor's review

A qualified, adverse or disclaimer conclusion, or a going-concern doubt, is serious; an emphasis of matter is a question.

IPO money

A deviation in the statement filed with results, or in the monitoring agency report, is serious.

Related parties, promoters, governance

Related-party value up 3 points of revenue; promoter pledge up 2 points; preferential shares or warrants to promoters; auditor, CFO, CEO or independent director exits; postponed meetings; restatements.

Promises against delivery

What an earlier call or release said would happen, set against this quarter. A question when two or more, or half or more, were missed.

Lenders

Margin, other-income and cash checks are withheld for banks, NBFCs and insurers. Instead: gross NPA up 30 bps or net NPA up 20 bps on the quarter, provision cover down 5 points, NIM down 20 bps, credit cost up 25 bps on the year.

Clean sheet

No question on any check that could run, with at least four checks run. The coverage is shown beside every badge.

Every number comes from the company's filed results (the filing read where we have one, the quarterly statements otherwise). No analyst estimate is used anywhere, so there is no beat or miss: each company is compared with its own history.

Numbers as filed with the exchanges, read by rules. A flag is a question with its numbers and source, never an accusation. FinMinutes is a financial data and analytics platform; nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security.
